Schedules, Schedules

In my previous life my title at a couple of the companies I worked for was "Planner" and "Master Scheduler".  What I did was plan processes through the factory or purchases from overseas to be completed or arrive in time to keep products available for customers without having too many in stock or running out.  I was always working in the future, sometimes even not knowing what day it really was.  I was always planning & scheduling for a future date.  That was my job or a portion of my job for 20 years.  I loved doing it.  Now, in my new life, it doesn't come as easily.

I have talked before how much I enjoyed being in the corporate world.  It went beyond what I did but was a large part, be it good or bad, of who I was.  Hubby was home more than me and so he handled the home front with kids schedules and what needed to be done around the farm.  Though the transition to leaving the corporate world to help make this a self-sustaining homestead was a choice I made and really wanted, it is still a challenge.  Before, I was managing goods & services that had  very critical deadlines to meet or face not so pleasant consequences with my employer.  Now I am scheduling myself.

Kids have schedules that I need to attend to such as extra-curricular events to attend or run them to both through the school and outside as well.  Hubby has a schedule that is NEVER the same.  He does not have a set Monday-Friday schedule.  It always varies and if someone calls in sick or goes on vacation, the schedule changes again.  Add into that is when he works at the 2 companies we co-own. This changes when we eat and how much I cook so I can pack food for him for when he won't be home for other meals.  I also do some work for the 2 companies as well that does not have a set schedule to it.  Now add into that the 2 time a day feeding of the horses and chickens and of course the large garden that takes large amount of time from March through October from planting, weeding, harvesting, canning & freezing. There is also getting the feed for the animals (hubby grabs feed too), groceries for us and my stepped up focus on getting more fit & healthy by two a day workouts, laundry, housework and 5-10 hours a week mowing 5 months out of the year.  Putting everything together has me shaking my head some days.

All this being said, I wouldn't change anything about how we have chosen to live.  I need to get me figured out.  Using corporate terms I need to apply 5S and Six Sigma methodologies to my processes.

I spent alot of my career at Newell Rubbermaid.  LOVED working for them!  Made it hard working elsewhere when I so loved what I had been doing.  I was treated very well there.  They asked for alot but I received some great opportunities as well.  So sad when my divisions were shut down.
